There are two different ways remote email access is commonly reached. If you are in a library or other location where you don’t use your own computer, web based email services are the best bet. For users who usually get email on their own laptop or pc, then a POP email account is the best choice.

POP stands for post office protocol and is the basis for how traditional email systems operate. When using POP to access your email, you access a POP server that verifies your username and your password before letting you access your account.

After the email is downloaded to your system, it will be deleted from the POP server. However, you can now look at your emails through your computer even when you are offline. The ability to send and receive emails requires a program like Outlook or Eudora, but many web browsers have client software built in.

The other way to email aside from POP is through a web based email provider. This allows you to send and receive emails from any computer, anywhere. However, you have to be online to email through these systems.

The greatest benefit to using a web based system is that you are able to check your emails through any computer that has a web browser in it. The only drawback is that you have to be online anytime you are doing anything related to emailing.

So as you can see, both options are good, and both have some drawbacks. Selecting the right method depends on how you prefer to get online, and what is most advantageous toward your preferences.
